Sadler’s Wells Theatre – Art in Motion

Theatre is located on Rosebery Avenue in the Clerkenwell, London. It falls in Central London, in the Borough of Islington. The theatre has been around for centuries; since its inception way back in the year 1683. It should be noted, however, that there has not been a single standing structure since the establishment of the theatre. In fact, there have been many avatars of the theatre [five, to be precise] prior to the current form of the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. The first establishment on the property was a ‘Musick House’, by a man named Richard Sadler. Later, when springs were discovered on the property, the name ‘Sadler’s Well’s’ found its root and the place has been referred to by that name since then.

However, this studio is not intended be to used much as the venue for a performance and is better known for its infrastructure which enables comprehensive rehearsals of performances which are taking place or are going to take place in the near future. This theatre or studio, to use terminology which it is sometimes referred to by, seats two hundred people. The Lilian Baylis Studio is named in order to honour Lilian Baylis, who was instrumental in establishing a group which had notable individuals such as Winston Churchill among its members, to take up the management of the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, on behalf of the nation. The Lilian Baylis Studio was started in October of 1988.
